Fans' Anger At Club
27th June 2007
Lincoln City FC are today trying to calm fans in the wake
of backlash caused by the club's transfer dealings.
Earlier this week, Lincoln City agreed terms to sign
36-year-old Steve Torpey, who has been released by Scunthorpe
United. The age of the experienced striker is the major
grievance that supporters feel, not least because many
Imps' fans wanted the club to sign 21-year-old striker
Spencer Weir-Daley from Nottingham Forest. Instead,
Weir-Daley joined divisional rivals Notts County, who
have already poached Imps' defender Paul Mayo on a Bosman
transfer.
To further fuel the backlash, the club decided to
terminate long-serving Imps defender Paul Morgan's
contract by mutual consent. A day later, Morgan signed
for Bury, as predicted by The Forgotten Imp in May. The
fans' grievance here is that Bury should have been made
to pay a transfer fee for Morgan rather than Lincoln
allowing him to leave for nothing.
Imps' chairman Steff Wright has today reaffirmed the
club's ambition in an article in today's Lincolnshire
Echo, which can be read here. The articles are also followed by
fans' comments.
The Forgotten Imp would like to add to these comments by
stating that none of this is Torpey's fault, who must be
wondering whether he has made the correct decision in
joining Lincoln City. Last season, there were also fans'
doubts over the signing of Mark Stallard, who later
proved his worth by scoring vital goals as The Imps
reached the play-offs. Either way though, the next
signing that Lincoln City make will be crucial as to
whether the club win over the doubting fans or whether
the fans' grievances at the perceived lack of ambition
grows.
