Peterborough's Branston Linked
2nd July 2007
There are strong rumours circulating today in
Peterborough that Lincoln City could be set to sign
Peterborough United's central defender Guy Branston.
28-year-old Branston is an already familiar name to
Lincoln City FC supporters, as he made six appearances
for The Imps between August - September 1999. Branston
joined Lincoln City, due a defensive injury crisis in
August 1999, on a month's loan from Leicester City. He
was spotted after impressing in a pre-season friendly
against Lincoln; while on loan, he received praise for
his defensive displays and for his willingness to join
the attack.
He failed to make a first team appearance for Leicester
but played on loan at Colchester and Plymouth. Then Imps'
manager John Reames stated, to the surprise of the
Lincoln supporters, that he had no interest in signing
Branston on a permanent contract.
In October 1999, he joined third division rivals
Rotherham on loan, where he also impressed but Rotherham
had more sense than Lincoln and quickly signed Branston
on a permanent deal. He was to play a major role in
Rotherham's climb to the old first division from the
third.
After five years, Rotherham decided to release Branston,
and he joined Sheffield Wednesday. He also played on loan
at Wycombe and Peterborough United, but after less than a
year at Sheffield Wednesday he left to join Oldham
Athletic in a permanent transfer.
In summer 2006, Branston made a return to Peterborough
United but things turned sour as by the end of the season
when he was told that he was no longer needed by
Peterborough.
