News Round-up (28/7)
28th July 2007
With around 14 days to go before the new season kicks
off, Lincoln City FC's pre-season is going well; the club
have even announced a new signing!
The week began with Lincoln City securing a 2-1 win over
French club side Genats d'Anglet. The winning goal was
scored deep into injury time courtesy of midfielder Lee
Frecklington. Lincoln had trailled for the majority of
the match until Jamie Forrester scored in the 87th
minute. Lincoln's next pre-season match saw them complete
their mini-tour of France with a 1-0 victory over Pau.
The only goal of the game was scored by Steve Torpey.
On Thursday evening a young Imps' team defeated county
non-league side Sleaford Town by a 2-1 scoreline.
Lincoln's goals were scored by Phill Watt and Lenell
John-Lewis.
Next came today's (Saturday's) friendly at non-league
Boston United. Despite Boston's now lowly Conference
North status, a near Lincoln City first team had to work
hard to achieve a 1-0 victory which came courtesy of a
goal from Nat Brown.
...and so on to transfer news....
Unfortunately most of the transfer news is about who will
not be joining Lincoln City this summer. Trialists Steve
McCathy and Kevin Smith will not be offered deals,
although McCarthy's future progress will be monitored.
Lincoln have also cooled their interest in Darlington
striker Jullian Joachim after Darlington asked for a
transfer fee. Despite Imps' Chairman Steff Wright
publicly declaring that there is money to send, the club
feel that paying a fee for Joachim would not be the best
use of resources.
It also seems likely that former Crewe Alexandra
full-back Anthony Tonkin will not be joining Lincoln
despite The Imps offering him a two-year contract. It is
believed that Tonkin favours a move to a club nearer his
south-west base.
Therefore, the next signing that people have been eagerly
anticipating is........33-year-old Gary Croft. As per the
Torpey transfer, this has prompted criticism from a
section of Imps' fans who feel that Croft's transfer is a
sign of a season of struggle ahead. However, Croft has
impressed while on trial and is a player capable of
playing in either full-back. With such a small squad,
these versatile players could prove their worth as the
season progresses.
