Nottingham At The Double?
28th November 2007
Over the past few days, Lincoln City FC had the rare
chance to record a Nottingham Double; unfortunately, this
was the not the case.
The first half of the potential Nottingham double saw The
Imps entertain Notts County at Sincil Bank on Saturday.
Lincoln were looking for their first win since August,
while County were trying to distance themselves from the
relegation threatened clubs, of which, Lincoln are one.
Lincoln opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time
when Ben Wright plundered his way into the penalty area
to poke the ball home. However, five minutes into the
second half, County equalised through a spectacular
long-range shot from Gary Silk. At this point, Lincoln's
players' heads could have fallen thereby ensuring yet
another defeat. Thankfully, the players were not deterred
by the goal loss, and kept their morale from dropping.
This was a very pleasing sight. Lincoln also tried, and
indeed succeeded in, playing neat football at times.
The Imps' courage was rewarded in the 75th minute when
Lee Frecklington surged from the midfield past several
challenges before scoring what would turn out to be the
winning goal.
The second half of the Nottingham double occurred on
Tuesday evening when Lincoln travelled to Nottingham
Forest for a FA Cup first round replay fixture. Forest
are currently second in the league, and their league
position does not lie, as Lincoln would find out.
Nottingham were always going to win the match even before
Kris Commons and two goals from Nathan Tyson gave them a
3-0 goal lead.
There were some positives from the game, especially the
fact that Imps' boss Peter Jackson played several
inexperienced players, including youth teamer Danny Hone
and Owain Warlow. The game will have been good
experienced for these players and they can hold their
heads up high, as they continued to battle until the
final whistle. Their reward came late in the match when
Jamie Forrester scored.
Now, Lincoln's players must take heart from their past
two performances for when they head to Stockport County
in their next league match. Lincoln are quite capable of
gaining the three precious points that could see them
escape the bottom two spots.
