So What Now?
31st December 2007
Just over a week ago, we reported that Lincoln City had
suffered a disaster against Darlington by losing 4-0 at
Sincil Bank. However, we optimistically looked forward to
six points from two holiday fixtures against fellow
relegation strugglers Bradford City and Grimsby Town.
We wrote: "So where next for Lincoln City FC?
"Well, it is expected that Lincoln will press on
with their optimistic goal of achieving promotion at the
end of the season. Last week, Imps' boss Peter Jackson
launched his five steps to promotion booklet, which aims
to see Lincoln achieve promotion in May 2008. Perhaps
more realistically, The Imps need to concentrate on
beating two of the teams who are immediately above them
in the table.
"First comes an emotionally return to Bradford City
to play Lincoln's first league match at Valley Parade
since the Bradford Fire. Next, is a trip to Grimsby Town,
who are of course managed by ex-Imps' boss Alan Buckley.
"Without doubt, a maximum haul of six points is
required, and despite today's setback, the Lincoln
players are good enough to achieve this."
We would like to apologise to Imps' supporters for
misleading them, as without doubt, The Imps are staring
relegation in the face following two poor performances
against Bradford City and Grimsby Town.
Taking each as they came: the Bradford match saw Lincoln
concede a goal inside the very first minute - not a
particular good start to a vital match. They did however,
equalise and at times were the better side. Just as it
seemed that Lincoln would achieve a point, they conceded
a second goal in second half stoppage time to lose the
match 2-1.
Next came the Lincolnshire derby fixture at Grimsby Town.
Unfortunately, Lincoln lost this game 1-0, with Gary
Jones scoring in the 85th minute. What makes this
scoreline particular hard to digest is that Grimsby
showed that they are a poor side. Happily for Grimsby:
Lincoln City showed that they are an even poor side and
it is hard to remember Lincoln registering one shot on
target during the whole match.
So what now?
Thankfully, January 1st is almost with us, which means
that the transfer window re-opens for a month. Without
question, new manager Peter Jackson must be given some
cash to go out and buy new players.
So what areas do we need to strengthen?
Almost every position is the succinct answer! Definitely
required are a creative midfielder - two if Lee
Frecklington leaves during the window. The summer rumour
that Leeds United want Frecklington is again doing the
rounds.
A couple of new defenders and at least one prolific
striker is also required.
Next up for Lincoln is a match against Bury, who have
struggled of late. This match is again another vital
match, which Lincoln simply cannot afford to lose.
All that remains is to wish all our readers a Happy New
Year and to wish Lincoln City a much better 2008.
