A Good Week Of History!
9th February 2008
Another week has past in the history of Lincoln City FC,
so what exactly has happened?
Well, on Tuesday evening, Lincoln City eased their
relegation fears via a 2-1 victory at fellow strugglers
Macclesfield Town. In truth, the result probably
flattered Lincoln, who only managed a couple of shots on
target all match. However, we are not going to criticise
the actual footballing performance, as Lincoln dug in and
doggedly earnt all three points. All the goals were
scored later on, with Danny N'Guessan opening the scoring
when he scored a breakaway goal.
A fine goal by Jamie Forrester was next to hit the back
of the net, as he fended off attentions from several
Macclesfield defenders. Alas, Lincoln's goal-against
statistics added another, as Gareth Evans headed a late
goal to leave Imps' fans nervously awaiting the final
whistle.
One piece of bad news is that assistant-manager Neil
McDonald has left Sincil Bank to become the first team
coach at Leeds United. Even this news does have a good
side, as Lincoln have received an undisclosed five-figure
sum for McDonald, who was under contract at Lincoln.
Imps' boss Peter Jackson is hopeful of appointing a new
assistant manager before Tuesday's match at Accrington
Stanley.
The next significant historical event came today
(Saturday) when Lincoln City hosted Rochdale at Sincil
Bank. This was an evenly contested match, which is
promising as Rochdale are aiming for promotion this
season.
The first goal came a minute before half time when
Lincoln were awarded a free-kick. Lee Frecklington sent
the ball goalwards where the Rochdale goalkeeper could
only parry it to Forrester, who scored from close range
for 1-0 to Lincoln. The lead lasted until the 55th minute
when Rochdale pulled a goal back. It came indirectly from
Lincoln pressure, as N'Guessan had seen his shot sail
over the crossbar for a goal kick. The goal kick started
open play with Thomas Kennedy passing to Rene Howe, who
sent the ball past Alan Marriott in The Imps' goal for
1-1.
As the match wore on, it seemed that it would end in a
1-1 draw. However, in the 80th minute, Lincoln won an
attacking throw-in, which Nat Brown hurled towards a
packed penalty area. The loose ball fell to Danny Hone,
who sent a right foot shot into the goal for 2-1 to
Lincoln. That was how the match ended, thereby earning
Lincoln City their third consecutive victory.
