One Good But Also One Bad Result
29th March 2008
There was much joy on Easter Monday when a superb
performance saw Lincoln City defeat Hereford United by a
2-1 scoreline at Sincil Bank.
However, there was some disappointing news as imps'
midfielder Scott Kerr was sent-off for violent conduct
and will now miss four matches. Whether Kerr's tackle was
worthy of a red card has created quite a debate and seems
to depend upon where you were sitting in Sincil Bank.
Having reviewed video evidence, Lincoln City FC decided
against appealing against the decision.
Kerr's dismissal came in the 28th minute, but
surprisingly against the odds, Lincoln took the lead in
the 30th minute. It was a superb solo goal from winger
Dany N'Guessan, who just kept running forward before
sending a low shot into the net for 1-0. The goal was the
trigger for Lincoln to replace striker Jamie Forrester
for 17-year-old midfielder Martin Pembleton, who was
making his Imps' debut.
Imps' goalkeeper Alan Marriott showed why he should be
offered a new contract at the end of season, as he
produced several excellent saves to deny Hereford an
equaliser. However, the visitors did draw level in the
61st minute via a goal from Gary Hooper.
Lincoln enjoyed some good fortune in the 80th minute when
Clint Easton was adjudged to have pushed Ben Wright over
inside the penalty area. It was a soft penalty to concede
but N'Guessan did not waste the opportunity and scored to
make the score 2-1 to Lincoln.
Alas, there was not much joy on Saturday when Lincoln
lost 4-0 at Peterborough United. In fact, you could say
that it was men against boys as Lincoln started with
three teenagers - Danny Hone, Lenell John-Lewis and
Martin Pembleton - plus twenty-year olds Shane Clarke,
N'Guessan and Paul Green.
Peterborough showed that they were eager to score an
early goal, and only saves from Marriott prevented
Peterborough scoring before the 14th minute. It was then
that Aaron McLean scored after Marriott had punched two
George Boyd shots away. Unfortunately, the second punch
fell kindly for McLean, who scored.
Surprisingly, the score remained at 1-0 to Peterborough
as the second half began. Alas, it took just two second
half minutes for Peterborough to double their lead as
they took advantage of Lincoln losing Green to off-field
treatment. Scott Rendell was the architect as his cross
was neatly finished by McLean in the 48th minute.
A 55th minute Peterborough throw-in saw them score a
third as Rendell took advantage of some hesitant
defending. There was a fine Peterborough move in the 66th
minute which sadly ended with a fourth goal for the home
side. Ex-Imp Dean Keates played in a free-kick, which
then saw McLean pass to Rendell who slotted the ball past
Marriott.
Overall, a disappointing day at Peterborough but The Posh
showed just why they are the League Two leaders.
