Dancing On The Quicksand
26th April 2008
When the fixture list was released in June 2007, Lincoln
City FC's chairman Steff Wright promised to "dance
on the beaches of Morecambe" if Lincoln had won
promotion by this weekend. Unfortunately, the season has
not turned out as we all expected or wished - perhaps,
thankfully, as Morecambe Bay beach is prone to quicksand!
Lincoln have had that sinking feeling for the majority of
the season. It is only since the turn of 2008 that things
have gradually picked up. Today's game was another
positive as Lincoln ran out 2-1 winners at Morecambe.
The first half was not particular pretty for Lincoln, but
then Morecambe were mainly restricted to long range
efforts. Probably against the run of play, Lincoln scored
the opening goal when Gary King passed to Ben Wright, who
scored in the 41st minute. Morecambe, but for two good
saves from Imps' goalkeeper Ayden Duffy, would have
scored a quick equaliser as they pressed just as the
first half drew to a close.
The second half was a proper exciting game of football as
saves and goal line clearances somehow kept the score at
1-0 to Lincoln. That was until the 69th minute when Imps'
right-back Paul Green advanced into the penalty area
before netting his first goal for Lincoln City FC.
Lincoln could have extended their lead as Jamie
Forrester, Wright and Dany N'Guessan all had shots either
saved or blocked en route to goal. It was however,
Morecambe who would score the next goal, which game from
Matthew Blinkhorn deep into stoppage time.
Overall, a good battling performance, especially in the
second half. The victory lifts Lincoln above their arch
rivals Grimsby Town in the League Two table. With one
match remaining, Lincoln are three points ahead of
Grimsby but do have a worse goal difference.
Meanwhile, forgotten Imps' midfielder Jamie Hand has
revealed that he may quit Sincil Bank this summer. Hand
is currently on loan at Conference club Oxford United,
where he is enjoying his stay. Hand has already been told
by Imps' boss Peter Jackson that his future lies away
from Lincoln City and he has now told the BBC that he
will sit down with Oxford when the season ends to see if
a permanent move could transpire.
It is widely believed that there could be a radical
overhaul of Lincoln's squad during the summer. A fact
backing this up is that The Imps fielded eleven trialists
- ranging from clubs as far apart as Liverpool to Retford
United - in last week's reserve match against Grimsby
town. We will not list them all as that might alert over
clubs. Lincoln lost the match 3-2.
