Lincoln Crumble (Again!)

3rd May 2008
Thanks goodness the final curtain has come down on
Lincoln City FC's 2007/08 season!
In typical of the season fashion, Lincoln lost heavily
via a poor to average performance against League Two's
bottom club Wrexham at Sincil Bank on Saturday.
Imps' boss Peter Jackson is believed to have finalised
his retained list but after today's performance, one or
two others could well have played their last game for
Lincoln City FC.
Wrexham took the lead after only nine minutes when Imps'
right-back Paul Green conceded a free-kick for a foul on
Marc Williams. Wes Baynes delivered the free-kick into
the danger area where Levi Mackin headed past Ayden Duffy
for 1-0 to the visitors. Wrexham continued to have the
upper hand and peppered Lincoln's goal with shots.
The Imps were forced into an unwanted substitution in the
27th minute when injury forced off Lee Frecklington who
was replaced by Shane Clarke. Five minutes later it was
2-0 when Gary Croft was penalised for handball just
outside the penalty area. Baynes scored direct from the
resultant free-kick.
Lincoln did pull a goal back shortly before half time but
it was a Wrexham player who scored, when Steve Evans
headed past his own goalkeeper for 1-2.
The Imps improved dramatically in the second half,
although they could not have played much worse.
Unfortunately, they could not break through the Wrexham
defence and therefore were restricted to long range
efforts, some of which did test Wrexham goalkeeper Gavin
Ward. Ben Wright saw his 72nd minute header cleared off
the goal line as City sort an equaliser.
Alas, it was Wrexham who scored the decisive fourth goal
when Clarke tripped Baynes, who picked himself up to
score direct from the free-kick in the 86th minute. Three
minutes later, Lincoln did reduce the deficit when Wright
ran forward before slotting the ball past Ward for 2-3.
Lincoln suddenly awoke again and were unlucky a few
minutes later when Lee Beevers saw his header rebound off
the post.
The final goal of the game was scored by Wrexham when
they counter-attacked leaving Chris Llewellyn to lob the
ball over Duffy for 2-4.
Overall a game that summed up Lincoln's 2007/08 season:
poor to start off with, good in the middle with a mixed
ending. Roll on 2008/09!
