Premiership Preview

9th May 2008

Lincoln City FC's season might have ended but the Premiership goes on for one final weekend. Here is
Sportingbet's preview of the final round of matches.

The curtain comes down on the 2007/08 Premier League season this weekend and for the first time in years the title race will be decided on the final day. Can Man Utd beat Wigan at the JJB Stadium and seal the title or will they let Chelsea in at the last minute? Will Steve Bruce do his former mentor a favour?

Matters at the bottom are also very much ‘up in the air’ with Fulham, Reading and Birmingham all desperate to claim the one remaining survival spot in this year’s top tier. Fulham currently have it in their own hands, requiring an away win at Portsmouth who could have the FA Cup final as a distraction.

Birmingham v Blackburn - Birmingham’s abysmal recent form mean they are the ones relying on others this weekend. They need to better both Fulham’s and Reading’s results or they will be relegated.

Chelsea v Bolton - Gary Megson has done his job and kept Bolton in the Premier League for another year. Can they now ensure the title heads to Old Trafford by taking something off Chelsea at Stamford Bridge?

Derby v Reading - No wins from their last six games has ensured Reading have a part to play in relegation proceedings. They need to beat whipping boys Derby to stand a chance of staying up.

Everton v Newcastle - Everton require just a point to secure 5th place and end another great season for David Moyes. Defeat however could let Villa in and demote the Toffees to 6th.

Middlesbrough v Manchester City - The managerial saga has certainly not helped Man City’s concentration these past weeks and they travel to the Riverside on the final day looking to end the season on a high. Can Sven go out with a bang?

Portsmouth v Fulham - Another vital game in the relegation battle sees Fulham travel to Fratton Park to meet Portsmouth. The Cottagers are hoping that Pompey have one eye on the FA Cup Final. Can Roy Hodgson’s men register their 3rd away win in the past month?

Sunderland v Arsenal - Not an awful lot to play for here but a win could see Sunderland move up a couple of spots if other results go there way. Although Arsenal are clear in 3rd place, Wenger will be keen to end the campaign with 3 points.

Tottenham v Liverpool - Despite winning the Carling Cup, Spurs, and especially Juande Ramos, will be glad to see the back of this Premier League season. Can they show their potential for next season by beating Liverpool on the final day?

West Ham v Aston Villa - Villa’s quest for 5th place hit a snag last weekend when they were comprehensively beaten by Wigan at Villa Park. There’s still a chance, but they need to win here and for Everton to lose at home to Newcastle.

Wigan v Manchester United - Former Reds hero Steve Bruce and his Wigan side stand between Sir Alex Ferguson and a 10th Premier League title. Surely Man Utd won’t throw a season’s hard work away by coming away from the JJB with less than 3 points?
