There has been a rumour circulating around Lincoln for
the past few days that today has turned out to be
correct: Ben Wright has signed for Macclesfield Town.
Wright was one of seven players released earlier this
month by Lincoln City FC; he has wasted little time in
fixing himself up for next season. Macclesfield are of
course managed by former Imps' boss Keith Alexander
although Wright signed for Lincoln after Alexander left
the club. However, Alexander still lives in Lincoln so
obviously keeps an eye on The Imps.
Wright signed for Lincoln City FC from Norwegian club IK
Start in August 2007. He was hailed by then Imps' boss
John Schofield as a terrific signing. Strange then, that
Schofield was reluctant to play Wright - a mistake that
probably helped lose Schofield his job.
When Peter Jackson took over as Lincoln City manager in
October 2007, he recalled Wright to the starting line-up.
Wright repaid Jackson's faith with several vital goals
during the 2007/08 season. He finished the club's leading
goalscorer with 15 strikes to his name and those goals
helped Lincoln City retain their Football League status.
Wright began his career at non-league Kettering Town in
1998. It was not long before Bristol City paid Kettering
£30,000 for him. However, during his two years at
Bristol City, Wright made just two substitute appearances
for them. He was also loaned out to Woking for a short
while.
In June 2001, Wright moved to Norwegian club Viking,
where he played in the UEFA Cup. He later transferred to
fellow Norwegian slide IK Start, from which Lincoln
signed him August 2007.
Once Wright's Lincoln City FC career was underway, he
scored 15 goals during the 2007/08 season, to help lift
Lincoln clear of relegation from the Football League.
Unfortunately, he was unable to build on this momentum
and scored just three goals during the 2008/09 season
despite being a regular in the matchday squad.
Wright paid the price for his failure in front of goal
when he was released by Lincoln City in May 2009.
