Colchester United Sign Beevers

b3

27th June 2009

Another departure this week, hot on the heels of Adrian Patulea, is Lee Beevers, who leaves Lincoln City to join Colchester United.

It is not an unexpected departure as Beevers was out of contract at Sincil Bank. However, The Imps had offered him a new deal back in January, which Beevers rejected as he wanted to keep his options open. Fast forward to May, and Beevers was again offered the same terms as January but speculation quickly emerged linking him with a move away.

Motherwell were reported to have offered him a pre-contract; whether that was correct, we shall never know. There was definite interest from Motherwell, but the situation was complicated when Motherwell's manager Mark McGhee left to join Aberdeen.

Speaking of his move to Colchester, Beevers said: “It's a step up for me, and something that I have been looking forward to for a long time.”

It is just a shame that he could not make that step up with Lincoln City. The departure of Beevers will leave a void in defence, as he could play anywhere along the back four. Last season, he was used as a left-back, which was a problem area for The Imps until Beevers was switched there.

Overall, Beevers, who was a £50,000 signing from Boston United in February 2005, made 185 appearances, scoring 11 goals for Lincoln City.

Lincoln will receive no compensation for Beevers as he is over the age of 24.
