Blackpool Sign Imps' Target

b1

28th June 2009

Lincoln City FC were dealt another blow this week, when one of their targets joined another club!

Last month, TFI reported that Lincoln had joined the chase to sign Billy Clarke on a free transfer. Unfortunately, The Imps have been beaten to the signing as Clarke has made the shock move to Blackpool.

The pursuit of Clarke was always going to be ambitious, not least because League One club Brentford were keen to recruit him. There was a glimmer of hope though, as Brentford said they would not "break the bank" for him, although if Brentford could not afford him then it was unlikely that Lincoln could. This left moneybags Notts County in the prime position to sign Clarke and they had offered him a two year contract.

21-year-old Clarke was a surprisingly released in May by Ipswich Town. This could be something to do with his return of just four goals in fifty-six appearances although over half of these appearances were as a substitute. However, Clarke showed his potential when he was loaned to Darlington (9 goals in 25 appearances), Northampton Town (3 goals in 5 appearances) and Brentford (5 goals in 8 appearances) during the 2008-09 season.
