Who Will Win The Championship?

b5

6th August 2009

The 2009/10 season is just hours away from commencement, so this is a good time to take a look at the latest odds for next season's Championship, as supplied by
Paddy Power

Unsurprisingly, Newcastle United are the pre-season favourites to win the Championship, but considering the turmoil of the club, their price of 5/1 is poor value. If they fail to win their opening matches, then their price should drift to a better value bet. However, the opposite is true should they win, making it a gamble as to whether a punter should wait a few weeks just in case before backing The Magpies.

Out of the three relegated clubs from last season's Premiership, Middlesbrough have the longest odds, at 6/1 to win the divisional title. If Middlesbrough's Alves plays then he will surely score goals that should take the Boro back to the Premiership.

Certainly worth an each way bet are Roy Keane's Ipswich Town. Ipswich are always among the top eight or so clubs in this division and Keane's appointment should motivate the players to push on for automatic promotion.

Other teams worth an each way bet for promotion are Reading, Sheffield United and QPR. Reading and Sheffield United came close to winning promotion last season while moneybags QPR underachieved last season.

At the bottom end of the list, the bookies do not rate Lincoln City's county rivals Scunthorpe United's chances of staying in the division, for they have the joint worse odds at 150/1 to win the league.

To take advantage of these odds, simply visit
Paddy Power , who currently have a special "bet £10 get £20 free" bet offer.
