New England Revolution Star Makes Debut
24th October 2009
The prolonged transfer of Khano Smith has finally been
completed in time for the winger to make his debut in
today's (Saturday's) match at home to Torquay United.
It is almost two weeks since terms had been agreed with
Smith but the deal was held up by red tape as Lincoln
awaited international clearance from the US Soccer
Federation before they could formally announce the
transfer. After an unexpected delay, that clearance
finally came through in time for Smith to take a place in
The Imps' starting line-up. He will remain at the club
until at least the New Year.
28-year-old Smith is a Bermudian international having
played 24 times for his country, scoring 8 goals since
2003. He is described as one of his country's most famous
players, having established himself in Major League
Soccer (MLS) in the US.
Speaking of Smith, who is a winger, Sutton said: "He
has a trick and he can go past people, so weighing it all
up, he certainly has something to offer."
In America he has been described as a "solid
player", but unfortunately for whatever reason, his
time in the MLS ended badly when he was
"waived" by New York Red Bulls in July. From a
brief search on Google, Smith is not held in any great
esteem by New York Red Bulls fans who appear to question
his signing from Seattle Sounders in exchange for
"allocation money" - (they have a complex
transfer system in the US!). He started just six games
for the Red Bulls, making an additional two substitute
appearances but failed to score a goal.
Looking further back in Smith's career, he appears to
have enjoyed happier times playing for New England
Revolution between 2005 - 2008. While at New England
Revolution, he scored 8 goals in 85 appearances. It was
here that he was converted from a striker to a winger
mainly as he has blistering pace and is a good crosser of
the ball.
Prior to joining the MLS, he was a sensation in Bermuda,
where he scored 15 goals in 28 appearances for Dandy Town
Hornets.
Since leaving Red Bulls, Smith has been trialling in
England both with Lincoln City (obviously) and Southend
United, where he featured for their reserve side.
Apparently, Smith lists his favourite moment in football
as scoring his first goal for Bermuda. Lets hope that he
has some more favourite moments with Lincoln City; I wish
him well.
