HARRY GRUNDY
Born unknown.

Lincoln City career: 42 appearances and 6 goals, between 1908-1910.

Position: outside-left (winger).

Clubs: Everton, Reading and Lincoln City.

Harry Grundy had experienced football at the highest level with Everton - albeit for one season only - having signed for Everton from very minor league football at Neston. Understandably, he found the transition hard and within the year, he had left Everton for a more sedate pace at Reading, who were then a non-league side.

He joined Lincoln in April 1908 when City were going through yet another financial crisis that resulted in the transfer of their best players. This left Lincoln to scour the non-league sides for talent to fill the gaps made by the departures. By the end of the 1907/08 season, Lincoln had finished bottom of the Second Division and were duly voted out of the league for a second time in their history. There was little blame attached to Grundy over Lincoln's predicament because he only played the final three matches of that turbulent season.

The next season saw Lincoln easily win the Midland League thereby gaining promotion back to the Football League. It was during Lincoln's season in the Midland League that Grundy scored all of his six goals for the club in thirty-six appearances.

Lincoln, upon their return to the Football League, signed higher calibre players which led to Grundy losing his first team place and he subsequently left the club.

TONY CUNNINGHAM
Tony Cunningham - a former Lincoln City FC strikerBorn: 12th November 1957 in Kingston, Jamaica.

Lincoln City career: 123 appearances and 32 goals, between 1979-1982.

Position: centre forward.

Clubs: Stourbridge, Lincoln City, Barnsley, Sheff Wed, Man City, Newcastle, Blackpool, Bury, Bolton, Rotherham, Doncaster, Wycombe and Gainsborough.

Tony Cunningham was a well travelled footballer who played for eleven League teams including, at the highest level, both Newcastle and Sheffield Wednesday.

His league career started when Colin Murphy spotted him playing non-league football with Midlands' side Stourbridge. Non-league captures were a favourite of Murphy since he offered a number of amateur players their chance of a professional career - most would later play in the top Division.

Lincoln City's squad of the early eighties was one of the best ever in the history of the club. Unfortunately, a lack of cash meant that Lincoln City were always having to sell at least one player a season; Cunningham was the first major departure from that squad.

1980-81 season had seen Lincoln gain promotion from Division Four and it was almost a successive promotion from Division Three except Lincoln missed out by a mere point. Murphy understandably wanted to strengthen his squad for an improvement on fourth position but he was told to raise money by selling. So in August 1982, Lincoln City reluctantly accepted Barnsley's £80,000 bid for Cunningham, which left Lincoln without a target man.

After leaving Barnsley in 1984, Cunningham signed for Sheffield Wednesday where he made 28 appearances, scoring five goals. This was sufficient for Manchester City to sign him just months after Cunningham had joined Sheffield Wednesday. Again, his stay at his new club was short but Cunningham joined Newcastle United in 1985, which would prove the pinnacle of his career.

Two years later, Cunningham made the shock move to Blackpool, who hailed him as a terrific signing after persuading him to drop down the divisions. The transfer fee was £25,000, which was set by a tribunal. Unfortunately, the highs of joining Blackpool turned into disappointment as Blackpool struggled in 1989. By now, the Blackpool manager whom brought Cunningham to the club - ex-Imp Sam Ellis - had now joined Bury. So in 1989, Cunningham put his Blackpool disappointment behind him and signed for Ellis' Bury.

Cunningham became an influential player at Bury, staying for two years before embarking on a short career move to Bolton Wanderers in 1991. After just nine appearances, although he did score four goals, he joined Rotherham United.

By 1993, Cunningham's football career was nearing its conclusion and he ended his professional career with short spells at Doncaster Rovers and Wycombe Wanderers. In 1994, he returned to Lincolnshire when he signed for non-league Gainsborough Trinity; while Gainsborough, he undertook a university business studies course. Cunningham now lives and works in Lincoln as a solicitor and is often been seen around Lincoln City's Magistrates' Court on weekdays.

DEAN KEATES
Born: 30th June 1978 in Walsall.

Position: midfielder.

Lincoln City career: 22+(2) appearances and 4 goals between July 2005 - January 2006.

Previous clubs: Walsall, Hull City, Kidderminster Harriers, Lincoln City and Peterborough United.

Dean Keates' future at Kidderminster Harriers was always in doubt following their relegation from the Football League in May 2005. Harriers had been eager to keep Keates, who was their Player of the Season for 2004/05. However, he chose to make a quick return to the Football League by signing a one-year contract with Lincoln City, with an appearance linked option of a second year.

Keates began his career as a trainee at Walsall in August 1995 and progressed through the ranks to their first team. During his seven years at Walsall, he made 201 appearances and scored 13 goals. In August 2002, he joined Hull City on a free transfer after rejecting the offer of a new contract at Walsall. Keates stayed nearly two years at Hull, making 54 appearances and scoring 4 goals for The Tigers.

In February 2004, he left Hull to link up with his former Hull City manager Jan Molby, who had returned to manage Kidderminster. Although Molby left Kidderminster soon afterwards, Keates remained to make 52 appearances, during which he scored 7 goals. However, his goals were unable to prevent Kidderminster's relegation.

He linked up at Lincoln City with Gary Birch, who joined The Imps in May 2005, following his release from Kidderminster.

Keates quickly became a fans' favourite at Sincil Bank, although his temper was a problem as he was sent off twice within a few weeks. However, in January 2006, he decided to submit a transfer request for personal reasons. Lincoln originally placed a £25,000 price on him but later released him from the club. The following day, he joined Walsall, whose interest was already known before Lincoln decided to release him.

After helping Walsall to promotion from League Two in 2007, he surprisingly quit Walsall for League Two club Peterborough United. It was a bold move but the gamble paid off as he helped Peterborough to win promotion from League Two at the end of the 2007/08 season. A season later, the gamble was even more of a success as Peterborough were involved in the League One promotion race.
