Retro Lincoln City FC
| DAVE FELGATE |
Born: 4th
March 1960 in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Wales.Position:
goalkeeper.
Lincoln
City career: 198 appearances between September
1980 - July 1985.
Clubs:
Bolton, Rochdale, Bradford City, Crewe, Lincoln
City, Cardiff, Grimsby, Rotherham, Wolves,
Chester, Wigan and Leigh.
Dave
Felgate is probably one of the best goalkeepers
to ever grace Sincil Bank. His exceptional form
made him a rare breed at Lincoln: a full
international whilst playing for The Imps. Wales
was the country that selected him for their
international against Romania. Although he was
named in several other Welsh squads, he was
unable to dislodge Neville Southall as Wales'
number one goalkeeper.
He
originally joined Lincoln on loan from Bolton in
September 1980 as Colin Murphy struggled to
replace the departed Peter Grotier, who himself
had been an excellent goalkeeper during the
Graham Taylor years.
Colin
Boulton had originally taken over from Grotier
but Murphy moved for Felgate when Boulton
suffered a broken leg. His initial loan period
was such a success that Murphy paid £25,000 to
secure Felgate's long-term services. He was
almost ever present during his five years at
Lincoln.
The
1982/83 season saw Murphy's side peak as
boardroom disputes cost The Imps promotion to the
old Second Division, which caused the side to
begin to break up. Felgate was amongst the
players from that team to be honoured, as he was
voted the PFA Division 3 goalkeeper of the year
for two consecutive seasons - 1982/83 and
1983/84.
The
1985 Bradford City Fire was the other turning
point and soon afterwards, Felgate left Lincoln
to join local rivals Grimsby Town for tribunal
set fee of £27,500.
A
couple of years later, he left Grimsby to return
to his original club Bolton where he appeared in
several Wembley finals. He made over 500 Football
League appearances in total before retiring from
professional football to work in a DIY store in
Leigh. He continues to play part-time at various
Lancashire non-league clubs and was Leigh's
man-of-the-match in their 1998/99 FA Cup tie
against Fulham.

| STUART NAYLOR |
Born: 6th
December 1962 in Wetherby.Position:
goalkeeper.
Lincoln
City Career: 49 appearances between February 1979
- February 1986.
Clubs:
Lincoln City, Kettering, Peterborough, Crewe,
West Bromwich, Bristol City, Exeter and Rushden
& Diamonds.
Stuart
Naylor joined Lincoln City as a schoolboy before
signing professional terms in 1980. His
first-team appearances were limited due to Dave
Felgate's superb ability but Naylor would have
made the first-team at most other lower division
clubs.
During
the early 1980's he had a trial for Wimbledon as
their goalkeeper Dave Beasant was refusing to
sign a new contract. However, the Wimbledon
players did not take too kindly to the possible
replacement for Beasant, so they made sure that
Naylor would not enjoy his trial. Fortunately for
Lincoln, he returned without signing for
Wimbledon, and he resumed his position as reserve
goalkeeper.
One
of his earliest appearances for Lincoln was as a
striker in the match against Newport County in
October 1982. Colin Murphy had requested more
funds to sign new players as an injury crisis had
ravaged Lincoln's small squad. The Imps' board
refused, so Murphy made his point by playing
Naylor as a striker in a match that City
unsurprising lost 5-1.
Naylor
was given his opportunity when Felgate left
Lincoln, and he performed admirably, so admirably
in fact, that topflight club West Bromwich
decided to pay City £100,000 in February 1986.
This sale was unplanned and Lincoln had no cover
for Naylor. The then Lincoln manager George Kerr
told the supporters not to worry despite
Saturday's match only being two days away by
assuring them that Lincoln would play a
goalkeeper "even if Bert Loxley has to play
in goal." Loxley was not needed as City
brought Trevor Swinbourne out of retirement.
Meanwhile,
during 1989, Naylor went on to represent
England's "B" side against Switzerland,
Iceland and Norway. He stayed at West Brom until
his transfer to Bristol City in 1997. He also
made several vital saves when he played at Sincil
Bank for Exeter City during the 1999/2000 season,
although Lincoln did win 1-0.
Upon
his release by Exeter in May 2000 he joined then
Conference club Rushden & Diamonds. Naylor
was last heard of contemplating retirement from
football to become a postman.

| PAUL MORGAN |
| Born: 23rd
October 1978 in Belfast. Position: centre-half
Lincoln City
career: 228+(10) appearnces and 2 goals between
July 2001 - June 2007
Clubs: Preston
North End, Lincoln City and Bury.
Ex-Lincoln City
manager Alan Buckley's reputation of developing
young talent must have certainly influenced Paul
Morgan into signing for the Imps. Without doubt,
Morgan was Buckley's best signing, after arriving
at Sincil Bank in July 2001 on a free transfer.
A Northern Ireland
Youth International, who was tipped for great
things until injury set his career back for two
years. His contract expired at the end of the
2000/01 season but Preston, because of his injury
situation, hesitated over a new deal. This
alerted a number of clubs including Rochdale and
Oldham and as a result, Preston decided that they
would offer him a year's contract.
After much
consideration, Morgan opted to join Lincoln with
the prospect of first team football should he
prove his fitness. His initial month's trial was
successful and he signed a permanent contract
with the Imps, having already made his debut.
Several excellent
performances propelled him back into the Northern
Ireland reckoning when their manager Sammy
McIIroy named him in a Northern Ireland
"reserve" side for a friendly against
Macclesfield Town in November 2001.
Unfortunately, three days after his call-up he
was injured at Shrewsbury and forced to withdraw
from the Northern Ireland squad.
Morgan was once
tipped to be Lincoln City's next big money sale,
after having a magnificent 2002/03 season. He
ended the season as Lincoln City's player of the
season and received a call-up to Northern
Ireland's 'B' squad in May 2003 but unfortunately
had to decline as Lincoln were involved in the
play-off's.
Since then, he has
become the captain of Lincoln City and signed a
three-year contract in June 2005.
Possibly Morgan's
chances of playing in the higher leagues have now
vanished after a dreadful 2005/06 season. He
received two red cards during the opening
fixtures of the season. Worse followed in
November 2005 when he broke a bone in his foot.
Morgan remained out of action until April, and he
clearly lacked match fitness upon his return.
The 2006/07 season
will be an important one for Morgan, especially
as his two defensive colleagues of Gareth McAuley
and Jamie McCombe have now left the club. Under
new manangement, Lincoln reverted to a 4-4-2
system which meant that only two centre-halves
were required. Morgan was given one of these
roles but sometimes failed to produce his best
display and was dropped. In April 2007, he
submitted a shock transfer request in order to
move back to the north-west of England.
Ironically, after submitting the request, he
reclaimed his first team spot and made several
excellent performances.
However, Morgan
would later become the subject of fans'
grievances when his contract was terminiated by
mutual consent despite known interest from Bury.
A day afterwards, Morgan did indeed sign for
Bury, leaving fans asking why Lincoln did not
hold out for a transfer fee.
