Jason Barnett was sold by the
then Wolves' manager and former Lincoln City
manager Graham Taylor for a mere £5,000. Taylor
must have been doing his former club a favour as
Barnett proved a bargain buy, who received
several awards while at Lincoln.
He began his career as a trainee
but failed to make an appearance for Wolves
before signing for Lincoln City FC. He was
immediately given a first team place and his
surging runs from right-back combined with his
pinpoint crosses made an instant difference to a
rapidly changing Lincoln City side.
Unfortunately, Barnett spent a
large portion of his Imps' career struggling with
various injuries but he always immediately
regained his place once fit. He was out of
contract at the end of the 1999/2000 season and
speculation linked him to Notts County. However,
in July 1999, he agreed a new three year deal.
Alas, he missed most of the 1999/2000 season due
to a freak toe injury and it was March before he
was fully fit.
When his contract expired in
June 2002, he was released due to Lincoln's poor
financial state. He turned down other offers to
remain in Lincoln, where he played for non-league
Lincoln United. He retired early from football to
pursue a career away from the game.
