Retro Lincoln City FC

ROBERT BETTS
Born: 12st December 1981 in Doncaster.

Position: midfield.

Lincoln City career: 1+(3) appearances between October - November 2001.

Clubs: Doncaster Rovers, Coventry City, Plymouth Argyle, Lincoln City, Rochdale, Kidderminster, Hereford United, racing Club Warwick, Forest Green and Quorn.

Robert Betts began his professional career as a trainee at his hometown club Doncaster Rovers, then of the Conference. After just three appearances for Doncaster, he was purchased by Coventry City in 1998.

He remained on the fringe of their first team although he did make three substitute appearances for Coventry, who were then of the Premiership. He was loaned to Plymouth during the 1999/2000 season but injury prevented him from making a huge impact.

Following Coventry's relegation from the Premiership, Betts become the subject of a controversial transfer, as Doncaster claimed that Coventry owed them money; Coventry disputed these claims.

Betts joined Lincoln on loan in October 2001 as cover for the injured John Finnigan. However, he started just one game in a Lincoln City shirt during a very disappointing loan spell.

He was eventually released by Coventry, upon which he joined Rochdale briefly. He has also subsequently played for Kidderminster Harriers, Hereford United, Racing Club Warwick and Forest Green Rovers for a variety of time periods. Alas, he has also failed to make more a handful of appearances for any of these clubs.

In 2006, he transferred from RC Warwick to Midland's League club Quorn. It was here that he enjoyed the most successful time of his career culminating in Betts being named as the Midland Football Alliance Player of the Season for 2006-07 season.

IAN HAMILTON
Born: 14th December 1967 in Stevenage.

Position: midfield.

Lincoln City career: 29 appearances and 1 goal between November 2001 - October 2002.

Clubs: Southampton, Cambridge United, Scunthorpe, West Brom, Sheffield United, Grimsby, Notts County, Lincoln City and Woking.

Ian Hamilton began his football career as an apprentice at Southampton in 1985, but he left after three years without making a single first team appearance.

He joined Cambridge United where he became a first team regular although he was allowed to leave for Scunthorpe United on a free transfer after just six months at Cambridge. This was Scunthorpe's gain because in 1992, West Bromwich Albion paid £160,000 for Hamilton.

It was while at West Brom that former Lincoln City manager Alan Buckley first worked with Hamilton. He was already a first choice at West Brom, and continued to be both during and after Buckley's reign. He made a £325,000 transfer to Sheffield United in March 1998 but the move turned sour and Buckley was only too pleased to loan Hamilton for Grimsby Town. The loan expired in May 2000 and by August 2000, Buckley had been dismissed by Grimsby. Any hopes of a permanent move to Grimsby were dashed so instead, he signed for Notts County in August 2000. That too proved a mistake because injury and other players limited his appearances for Notts County.

Once again, injury limited Hamilton's first team appearances and he struggled to play regularly for Notts County. Nine months after taking over as Lincoln manager, Buckley persuaded Notts County to allow Hamilton to join City on a free transfer in November 2001.

However, Lincoln City FC's supporters took against his indifferent performances and he was constantly criticised. He left Lincoln in October 2002 via a severance deal, which terminated his contract; he signed for Woking but left in May 2003 and promptly retired from football.

LEON METTAM
Born: 9th December 1986.

Position: striker.

Lincoln City career: 2+(4) appearances and 1 goal between January 2006 - June 2007.

Clubs: Lincoln City, Ilkeston Town and Corby Town.

Leon Mettam was already a familiar name - even if few Lincoln City FC supporters can actually place a face to the name - as he had already made his first team debut prior to signing professional terms with Lincoln in July 2006. His one first team appearance was as a substitute on January 2nd 2006 when Lincoln City visited Mansfield Town.

Perhaps more significantly, this match was Head Coach's John Schofield first in charge of Lincoln City. This was the day that former Imps' boss Keith Alexander was placed on leave, only to return to Sincil Bank a few days later.

Schofield selected the team for Mansfield, so it should prove to be a successful 2006/07 season for Mettam. He is an enthusiastic player, who has great finishing. This is an attribute that the majority of Lincoln City's strikers lacked during the 2005/06 season. Mettam showed early promise but a rush of blood saw him sent-off for a late challenge in a match against Hereford United in February 2007. He never played for Lincoln City again and was released in June 2007.

After leaving Lincoln, Mettam first joined Ilkeston Town before signing for ambitious club Corby Town.
