Retro Lincoln City FC

OLLIE RYAN
Born: 26th September 1985 in Boston.

Position: striker.

Lincoln City career: 10+(31) appearances between November 2004 - March 2008.

Clubs: Ilkeston Town, Lincoln City, Hucknall Town, Bourne Town and Boston United.

Ollie Ryan signed professional terms in May 2005, and is probably the most promising youngster that Lincoln have produced during the 2004/05 season.

He made his debut in Lincoln's 3-0 FA Cup defeat at Hartlepool United in November 2004. Later, he made several substitute appearances before turning professional.

October 2005 saw him make his full Lincoln City FC debut and many thought that he was set for a run in The Imps' side. However, he was dropped from the team and later loaned to Ilkeston Town. He has since been recalled and has been progressed to matchday substitute.

Ryan was initally highly rated by Lincoln City FC's supporters, who were willing him and Lee Frecklington to succeed at the club. It seemed that Ryan, like Frecklington, would benefit from the elevation of manager John Schofield from his role as their former youth team boss. However, this would not prove case as Ryan, unlike Frecklington, struggled. In June 2007 he was offered a new six month deal followed by a six-month renewal that was either to make or break Ryan.

It happened that it would be disappointment for Ryan as he left the club in March 2008 by mutual consent and without scoring a first team goal for The Imps. A day later, he joined non-league Hucknall Town on non-contract terms until the end of the 2007/08 season. However, his stay at Hucknall was brief as he quickly joined Bourne Town. However, his stay at Bourne was also brief as in June 2008, he joined his hometown club Boston United.

Ryan, despite having never scored for Lincoln, proved an astute signing for Boston as his goals helped them avoid relegation from the UniBond Premier Division in 2009.

ALAN MARRIOTT
Born: 3rd September 1978 in Bedford.

Position: goalkeeper

Lincoln City career: 395+(31) appearances between August 1999 - June 2008.

Clubs: Tottenham, Lincoln City, Rushden & Diamonds and Mansfield Town.

Alan Marriott began his career as a youth team player at Tottenham Hotspur, where he was coached by former Lincoln City manager Colin Murphy.

Upon his release by Tottenham in May 1999, Murphy recommended Marriott to the then Lincoln City chairman-manager John Reames, who initially offered him a three month contract. By November 1999, Marriott had sufficiently impressed to win a longer contract and three months later, he made his Football League debut against Torquay United. An extended run followed, and his reward was being named as the 1999/2000 Lincoln City FC Young Player Of The Season.

Since then, he has more or less been first choice goalkeeper although he lost his place in December 2000 when Lincoln signed Chris Day on loan from Watford. When Day returned to Watford in March 2001, he was recalled to side but made several noticeable errors.

The 2001/02 season began in much the same way with his mistakes costing City vital points; as a result, Paul Pettinger was given the chance in goal. However a few games later and Marriott was recalled to side and produced several excellent displays to prevent Lincoln from losing.

Marriott improved dramatically during the 2002/03 season and became one of the best goalkeepers in the lower divisions. His contract expired in June 2003 and Lincoln City faced a battle to keep hold of him. Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford City were interested, but an internet campaign helped to persuade Marriott to stay at Lincoln for another two seasons.

Lincoln faced the same problem in May 2005 when Marriott's contract expired. However, he agreed a three-year contract with The Imps and was a vital member of Lincoln City's play-off achieving teams of the next two seasons.

Marriott endured a poor 2005/06 season by his standards, although he did help Lincoln City reach the play-offs for the fourth consecutive season. However, his form was inconsistent and he came under severe criticism from supporters at time, especially when he was dismissed at Torquay United for showing dissent.

There was one high point of the 2005/06 season for Marriott, as he became one of the few players to make over 300 first team appearances for Lincoln City FC. Marriott's good form returned for 2006/07 season and among the highlights saw him break another record, this time the most clean sheets kept by a Lincoln City goalkeeper.

In May 2008, there was controversy when Marriott was released by Lincoln City FC, a year short of his testimonial season. New manager Peter Jackson appeared not to rate Marriott as highly as other Imps' managers had done in the past.

A number of clubs were interested in Marriott including Cambridge United and Crawley Town. However, it was Rushden & Diamonds who made a shock swoop in July 2008, to secure Marriott's services.

Marriott began the 2008-09 season as first choice goalkeeper for Rushden & Diamonds until he sustained an injury that cost him his place. Unable to regain that place, he joined Conference rivals Mansfield Town on loan in January 2009.

ADIE MOSES
Born: 4th May 1975 in Doncaster.

Position: centre-half

Lincoln City career: 47+(8) appearances and 1 goal between July 2006 - June 2008.

Clubs: Barnsley, Huddersfield, Crewe Alexandra, Lincoln City, Mansfield Town and Gainsborough Trinity.

International honours: 2 England Under-21 caps.

Adie Moses, who is a central defender, began his career as a trainee at Barnsley in July 1993. His stay at Barnsley incorporated their dramatic rise to the Premiership, where they became everyone's second team. However, they would not survive in the Premiership and in fact, came close to liquidation as they further slipped through the Championship to League One.

Moses left Barnsley in December 2000 in a £225,000 transfer to Huddersfield Town. Overall, he made 181 appearances for Barnsley and scored three goals.

It was while he was at Huddersfield that injuries began to interrupt his career. He made 78 appearances for Huddersfield between December 2000 to July 2003 before leaving Huddersfield on a free transfer. During his time at Huddersfield, he worked alongside both Lincoln City's Director of Football John Deehan, who was then a coach at Huddersfield, and former Imps' defender Nat Brown.

Crewe Alexandra gave Moses the opportunity to play for them in July 2003. Unfortunately, injuries once again curtailed his career and hence this is the reason why he has played just 63 league and cup matches during the past three years. Moses was released by Crewe at the end of the 2005/06 season.

Providing that Moses' injury-hit past was behind him, then he should have proved a good signing for Lincoln City FC as he also played twice for the England Under-21 team during his days at Barnsley.

Moses began his Lincoln City career well by scoring a debut goal. However, towards the latter part of the 2006/07 season, he was dropped and faced a battle to win back his place for the 2007/08 season. He did succeed but quickly fell out of favour with new manager Peter Jackson, and was promptly released in June 2008 when his contract expired.

Moses opted to continue playing despite undertaking a journalism course, and chose to join Conference club Mansfield Town in July 2008. He was named as Mansfield captain for the 2008-09 season but a greater honour would be bestowed on him when he and fellow ex-Imp Mark Stallard were named as caretaker managers in December 2008. However, the appointment was brief as a new manager was given the post over them; in early May 2009, both Moses and Stallard were told that they were free to leave Mansfield.

Moses did have stay much longer at Mansfield as Gainsborough Trinity came in for him in late May 2009.
