David Graham began
his career as a trainee at Glasgow Rangers in
July 1995. He struggled to gain a first team
place at Rangers, which is perhaps not
surprisingly considering the wealth of talent at
Rangers. He made just 5 appearances for Rangers
before leaving in November 1998 to join
Dunfermline. Again; he struggled to claim a
regular first team place but did establish
himself as a often called upon substitute. In
total he made 44 appearances and scored 5 goals
for Dunfermline.
In January 2001,
Graham joined Inverness Caledonian Thistle but
made just 4 appearances during a two-month loan
deal. In March 2001, he spent the remainder of
the 2000/01 season on loan at Torquay United.
Despite only this brief period, Torquay saw
enough potential in Graham to sign him
permanently in July 2001.
It was at Torquay
that Graham's career finally began to flourish as
he helped Torquay go from relegation contenders
in 2000/01 to automatic promotion successes in
2003/04 season. Although one player does not make
a team, Graham's goals certain helped Torquay to
success. In 130 appearances for Torquay, he
scored 49 goals which is ratio of around one goal
every two games.
His form began to
get him noticed and in June 2004 he completed a
£215,000 transfer to Wigan Athletic. Graham was
often used a substitute by Wigan during the
2004/05 season - his debut season at Wigan - so
scored just once in 32 appearances for Wigan.
In August 2005,
Graham made a £250,000 move from Wigan to
Sheffield Wednesday. Again, he struggled to
recapture his goal scoring form of Torquay
United. He scored just 3 goals in 30 appearances
for Sheffield Wednesday.
Halfway through
his two-year spell at Sheffield Wednesday, he
joined Huddersfield Town on loan. This brought
Graham into contact with current Imps' boss Peter
Jackson, who was the then Huddersfield Town
manager. He scored 9 goals in 18 appearances
thereby matching his Torquay United form of one
goal every two games.
While at Sheffield
Wednesday, Graham had further loan spells at
Bradford City and Torquay United. At Bradford, he
scored 3 goals in 23 appearances but he failed to
score for Torquay in seven appearances.
In August 2007, he
finally left Sheffield Wednesday and opted to
join Gillingham. However, a change of Gillingham
manager soon after Graham signed meant that he
was out-of-favour after scoring 4 goals in 19
appearances. He decided to cancel his Gillingham
contract by "mutual consent" in January
2008 in the hope of finding a new club before the
transfer window closed.
A new club failed
to materialise, so when Graham signed for Lincoln
City in June 2006, it meant that he had not
played competitive football for six months. With
this in mind, Jackson elected to offer Graham a
six-month contract in the hope that Graham can
recapture the promise and form that he once
displayed for Torquay United.
However, it would
be a quiet six months for Graham as he struggled
to break into the Lincoln City first team. This
was despite impressing during the only two
matches that he started for The Imps. Graham was
released in January 2009. In March 2009, Graham
made the surprise move to minor non-league club
Sheffield FC despite having the talent to play at
a higher level.
