Steve Thompson Profile

Despite playing for several clubs during his career,
Steve Thompson is most likely to be associated with
Lincoln City Football Club. He is also widely associated
with Colin Murphy, who is another former Lincoln City FC
manager - when the duo get together, one could describe
the pair as Lincoln City's answer to Laurel and Hardy!
Thompson began his career at Sheffield United before
joining non-league Boston United following his release
from Sheffield United. Murphy spotted him playing for
Boston United and Thompson was quickly recruited as part
of Murphy's plan to rebuild Lincoln City FC.
He made over 150 appearances for Lincoln and became a
vital part of The Imps' success during the early 1980's
before leaving to join Charlton. He enjoyed success at
Charlton by captaining them to promotion to the First
Division and to the Simod Cup final.
Spells at Leicester City and Sheffield United followed
before he returned to finish his playing career at
Lincoln City. He later took over as manager from the
sacked Allan Clarke in November 1990. Thompson lasted
until May 1993 when his contract was shockingly not
renewed despite The Imps having gone from a side that
were relegation candidates in 1990 to one that just
missed out on the play-offs in 1993 by virtue of goal
average.
After leaving Lincoln, Thompson had coaching and scouting
spells at Doncaster Rovers and Newcastle United before
joining Southend United in 1995, first as Director of
Football and then as caretaker manager. He turned down
the offer of the permanent position, opting to rejoin
Murphy as assistant-manager at Notts County; later he was
Sheffield United's caretaker-manager.
After a lengthy spell away from football's main circle,
he made a shock comeback when he was named as Cambridge
United's manager in December 2004. At the time, Cambridge
were bottom of League Two but despite a brave effort,
their off-field problems contributed to their relegation
at the end of the 2004/05 season.
Thompson left Cambridge in summer 2005 and was later
employed as a commentator on Radio Lincolnshire. He was
tipped to make a return to Lincoln City after Keith
Alexander quit The Imps in May 2006. However, he failed
to gain an interview for the job but instead, he was
appointed as Notts County manager in June 2006.
